Grants to Canada organizations, local governments, and IHEs for projects to protect the natural environment, with a focus on the conservation of fish and their habitats. Funding is intended to support projects in the areas of environmental restoration, wildlife conservation, education and awareness, research and development, and environmental quality improvements.
Priority is given to projects that restore the natural environment and conserve wildlife, followed by:
The purpose of any contribution to the EDF is to restore the environment and conserve wildlife and habitats in a scientifically sound, cost-effective, and technically feasible way.
Funding is currently available in the following provinces and territories:
British Columbia: For projects related to the conservation and protection of fish or fish habitat or the restoration of fish habitat in the Province of British Columbia, with priority for projects in the East Kootenay region.
Nunavut: For projects related to the conservation and protection of fish or fish habitat or the proper management and control of fisheries or fish habitat in the Territory of Nunavut, with a priority for projects in the Kitikmeot Region.
Yukon: For projects related to the conservation and protection of fish or fish habitat or the restoration of fish habitat in the Yukon Territory. Priority for projects that focus on restoration, or environmental quality improvement, or education and awareness.
Quebec: For projects aimed at promoting the protection, conservation, recovery or restoration of the environment in the Province of Quebec, with priority for projects in the Bas St-Laurent region.
Newfoundland and Labrador: For projects related to the conservation and protection of fish or fish habitat in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Project activities must focus on Marine Conservation Areas or Marine Refuges.

There is no maximum project duration. The average length of a project is approximately two years.
