Grant Description
Grants to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit music presenting, performing, and service organizations for musical performances and operational support. Some applicants must contact the funding source prior to submitting an application. Funding is intended for organizations that have demonstrated a substantial commitment to contemporary concert music at a high level of excellence.

General Operating Support is available for organizations with a history of substantial commitment to contemporary American concert music and with plans to continue that commitment.

Project Support is also available for exceptionally important activities relating to contemporary concert music that are out of the scope of an organization’s regular programming, and often (but not necessarily) a discrete initiative.

The following activities will be considered eligible:

  • Performances by organizations
  • Presentation of performances
  • Professional development programs
  • Advocacy and service
  • Archival activity
  • Any other contemporary concert music-related activity that has been reviewed and approved by the Grants Manager

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Eligible applicants must:
- Be a publicly supported non-profit or fiscally sponsored organization with a history of substantial commitment to contemporary concert music (music written within the last 50 years);
- Have a minimum of two years of performance or, for groups other than performing groups, programmatic activity prior to the time of application (except for special projects of extraordinary significance: please contact the Grants Manager for approval); and
- Have an operating budget of $10 million or less. (Organizations with budgets over $10 million may apply for project support with the approval of the Grants Manager.)

Presenters:
Music venues or similar organizations whose principal activity is to present live musical performances by a variety of performing groups throughout the year.

Music Service/Advocacy Organization:
Organizations that support composers and performers through grants, residencies, training programs or similar activities, or aid in the preservation and dissemination of contemporary concert music.

Festivals:
Organizations whose principal activity is to present live musical performances by a variety of performing groups for a discrete period.

Non-profit and fiscally sponsored organizations with eligible activity throughout the United States and internationally will be considered for funding from the Foundation. Please note that organizations based outside the United States are only eligible for funding of works by American composers.

Ineligible
The Amphion Foundation does not provide funding for the following:
- Performances by individuals
- Unincorporated or for-profit organizations except via a fiscal sponsor
- Endowment funds
- Music publishing projects
- Student ensembles*
- Volunteer, community, and amateur ensembles*
- Educational institutions*
- Composer commissioning fees and/or honoraria**
- Composition competitions (except as part of a larger program of support for composers) - Programming outside the field of contemporary concert music; this includes commercial, pop, jazz, Broadway-style musical theater, sacred, holiday, and traditional concert band music.

*Such organizations are not generally eligible but may apply if authorized in advance by the Grants Manager.

**Organizations that are part of a commissioning consortium and wish to apply for support for the performance of the commissioned work should contact the Grants Manager for further information.

Educational institutions may not apply for activities involving school-age students, student ensembles, or credit-bearing university-level activities but they may apply for performances or other eligible projects that involve professional musicians (including faculty).

Pre-Application Information
The deadline for applications for each calendar year is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the date indicated:
- The Spring grant cycle has an annual deadline of February 28.
- The Fall grant cycle has an annual deadline of September 15.*
*Please Note: The 2023 Fall grant cycle deadline has been extended to Thursday, September 28, 2023.

NOTE: There are two application types available to organizations applying to the Fall 2023 grant round:
- Presenters
- Music Service Organizations

Due to the technical limitations of the grant system, if your organization’s activities include musical performances, you MUST apply as a Presenter for this round to be considered for funding regardless of the actual nature of your organization.

The spring grant cycle is open to Performing Organizations:
- Chamber Ensembles
- Chamber Orchestras
- Orchestras
- Choral or Vocal Ensembles
- Opera Companies
- Ballet or Dance Companies
- Experimental or Performance Art Groups

The fall grant cycle is open to all other eligible organizations:
- Music Service/Advocacy Organizations
- Professional Development/Training
- Artist Residency Programs
- Libraries/Archives
- Radio/TV
- Presenters
- Festivals

NOTE: Performing Organizations must apply to the spring grant cycle. Such organizations may also apply to the fall grant cycle only if they operate a discrete and substantial standalone program that qualifies for fall grant cycle eligibility. All requests to apply to both cycles must be approved by the Foundation in advance. Please contact the Grants Manager for further information.

Estimated Size of Grant
In general, grants will range between $1,500 and $7,500, although larger grants may be awarded to larger performing organizations with an extraordinary commitment to contemporary concert music or a particularly significant project. The Foundation does not award grants larger than the amount requested by the Applicant.

Term of Contract
The Foundation provides funding for programming that occurs between September of the current year through August of next year. The current cycle provides funding for programming between September 1, 2023 and August 31, 2024. Activity that occurs before this period is no longer eligible. Activity that occurs after this period should be submitted as part of a future application.
