Sigma Awards - Google News Initiative

Deadline Date:

01/14/22 11:59 PM ET

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Awards to USA, Canada, and International journalists and newsrooms to recognize outstanding work in data journalism. Entries may include but are not limited to the following topics: the environment, sports, politics, and the pandemic. Awardees will receive a monetary prize, a certificate, and speaking opportunities.

The Sigma Awards is a competition to celebrate the best data journalism from around the world. Striding into its third year, it’s also here to empower, elevate and enlighten the global community of data journalists.

This year’s Sigma Awards will be about highlighting the very best data journalism done about the pandemic (and building an international database record of such projects), but also those covering other topics such as politics, sports, or the environment.

Winners will be brought together to participate in and lead online data journalism panels, discussions and workshops.

They will not only learn from each other, but will be reaching out to the broader community of data journalists and would-be data journalists, building relationships that will help spark better collaborations and work around the world.

What Sigma would like to see:

  • Great data collection and analysis in the service of journalism, ideally shining a light on facts and issues of public interest that would otherwise not be known;
  • Great storytelling and engagement with strong visual and interactive elements of (ideally) that kind of reporting;
  • Great public service, either in reporting/analysis of key issues or in terms of empowering communities to discover important information for themselves;
  • Great innovative ideas that will likely move the field forward;

Estimated Size of Grant:

A US$5,000 cash prize will be split amongst winners. Winners and citations will also get a certificate and speaking opportunities in Sigma events.

Term of Contract:

Entries must be for work published in calendar year 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

This year, entries will be accepted from all over the world.

Entries should specify if they qualify as a large or a small newsroom or as an individual, where applicable. Small newsrooms are defined as those with 35 or fewer journalists (including regular freelancers/contractors), or equivalent (eg, two half-time freelancers count as one person.)

Because of the tight deadlines around the 2022 contest, entries in languages other than English should offer as much translation as possible.
